Common mistakes customers make when developing a website: personal experience

Over the years of working in web development, I've encountered several similar scenarios. A client comes in with a good idea and budget, but during development, the website starts to fall apart: deadlines slip, costs rise, and the result doesn't meet expectations. These situations stem from typical mistakes clients make during website development, which are rarely discussed upfront.
In this article, we'll examine errors when ordering a website in practice—without theory or abstractions.
🔹 Mistake №1. «We don't know what we want yet - we'll figure it out as we go.»
The most expensive phrase in website development.
When a project starts without a clear understanding of its structure, functionality, and goals, development turns into an endless process of approvals and revisions.
What happens in practice:
- At the design stage, they did one thing, but at the development stage, they ask for something else;
- the client "had a different idea";
- every revision leads to further revisions.
How to do it right:
Even a minimal, but well-defined specification saves time, money, and stress. I help the client formulate requirements rather than waiting for a perfect document.
🔹 Mistake №2. The website has no business purpose
Very often, clients want:
- "a modern design"
- "to be as good as the competition"
- "just update the website"
But a website without a clear goal doesn't produce results.
Typical outcome:
- there's a website, but no leads;
- there's traffic, but no conversions;
- the business doesn't understand why they even need a website.
What needs to be done:
Answer one question: what should a website do?
Sell, collect leads, explain the product, support sales—only then does development begin.

🔹 Mistake №3. Saving where it matters most
Trying to do it "cheaper" almost always ends the same way: the website has to be redesigned.
What this results in:
- outdated technologies;
- poor loading speed;
- SEO and security issues;
- inability to make further improvements.
It's important to understand: cheap website development ≠ profitable.
As a result, the client ends up paying twice.
🔹 Mistake №4. Constant edits without understanding the consequences
Constant phrases like "let's add another button" or "could we add this" seem trivial, but in website development, there are no trivialities.
Why this is a problem:
- The interface logic changes;
- Existing functionality breaks;
- The project timeline and cost increase.
How I recommend working:
All changes must be approved, with an understanding of how they impact the project as a whole.
🔹 Mistake №5. Ignoring SEO during the development stage
The decision to "bolt on" SEO to a website after launch has no consequences.
The structure, speed, code, and adaptability are determined during the website development stage.
What clients often overlook:
- incorrect page structure;
- lack of speed optimization;
- non-responsive design.
The result: the website exists, but it's not visible in search results.
🔹 Mistake №6. There is no responsible person on the customer's side
When decisions are made by several people at once, the process grinds to a halt.
What happens:
- One person approves, another cancels;
- Edits contradict each other;
- Deadlines are pushed back for no apparent reason.
The solution is simple:
One project manager on the client's side = website development twice as fast.
🏁 Final
Most website development problems arise not from technology, but from a lack of a systematic approach.
Clear goals, understandable requirements, and proper communication help create a website that:
- operates reliably,
- ranks well in search results,
- and delivers real business results.
If you're just planning your website development, it's better to address these issues upfront than to fix them after launch.
